Nikolai Grozev is a mayor of Nova Zagora with population of around 23 000 citizens. Recently he ordered a lot of sugar to be poured on the streets in a ritual against car accidents. It is a folk belief that sugar can chase away bad luck and evil forces.
Some people call it a "superstition" but the mayor replies that this is no different from going to the church to lit a candle.
As mister Grozev explains:
"Within just a few days in the territory of Nova Zagora two very serious accidents happened. In one two policemen were killed and five other poeple were wounded. In the other two young boys were killed. These accidents occur out of nowhere".
In Bulgaria car accidents are a very serious problem with a lot of dead and wounded.
